Rome was founded during the first millennium, B.C., and is one of the oldest cities in the world. Today the city proper covers 1290 sq km and has a population of almost 3 million. The capitol city of Italy is located between the Tiber and Aneine rivers, near the Mediterranean Sea. The home of the Pope and the seat of all Roman Catholicism lies within the city, in a small separate city, The Vatican. The best time for Rome Travel is from late April through the end of October, when you'll have your choice of tours and tour buses. This is also the best time of the year for the outdoor concerts and touring the city. If you would like to search the Roman streets on your own, go in the off season for a more relaxed and less expensive trip.
